Students tell your parents what person you decided to study and why.

In math, we continued to explore estimation by comparing smaller known quantities to larger (unknown quantity).

We continued to look at the characteristics of nonfiction text and we began our research project. We broke up into our research group.

Today’s Learning Intentions

In Daily 5, we did two rounds of Read to Self and Read to Someone. In math, we began talking about estimation strategies such as using photographs as referents.

In Writers workshop, we began our discussion on metaphors by looking at symbols and what they mean.

It’s like a sign Hamdoon

It’s like a picture Zianna

Japanese letters are symbols Myla

It’s like a sign with a meaning Badger

Picture for your team Bauer

It’s a shape with words Emily

Shapes on flags Sarah
A shape with a meaning Gabby

A picture that represents something or someone or somewhere or words or actions or thoughts/ideas Adara

In inquiry, we began our research project by looking at features in non-fiction texts.

Learning intentions for our day...

  • Literacy - We book shopped today and really considered the purpose of our new book using the I-pick strategy.  It's ok to read a variety of books but sometimes a certain type of book fits best best to reading aloud to a partner.  These books will be the ones that we will use to record our reading into Iris over the next few weeks.
  • Math - We communicated our thinking about how we counted our objects yesterday.  We continue to build our ability to communicate our thinking and explain WHY we choose the strategies we do.
  • Inquiry - We read the story, The Best Part of Me, and began to consider the best part of ourselves.  We discussed how we can use our body to communicate positivity through actions, words and creativity.
  • Health - Today we discussed how we react to problems. Sometimes these reactions can be expected for the size of the problem but in some cases they can be unexpected.

Ask me about...

the types of reactions we have to problems.

Learning intentions for our day...

  • Literacy - We learned of some 'magic' words that writers use to add detail to their writing.  We practiced adding details to our writing, just like writers have to practice new skills and techniques to become better writers.
  • Math - We had 2 intentions for today: 1.)  To count efficiently.  2.)  To develop a visual understanding of 100 and 1000.  We were so surprised at how differently these numbers can look depending on the objects we are counting.
  • Inquiry - We worked in groups to represent characteristic of Gandhi's life by creating a tableaux (frozen picture) of a part of his life that illustrated this characteristic.

Ask me about...

the magic words writers use to add detail and invite the reader into their writing.

Learning intentions for our day...

  • Literacy - We continued to focus on reading to a partner and ourself this time practicing these 2 activities at the same time.  Establishingthese routines is important work so we will be independent as our teachers work with small groups during our Daily 5 time.
  • Math - Today we worked towards developing an understanding of 10, 100 and 1000 through counting collections of items.  We explored many different strategies and discussed efficient strategies for counting sets.  Many of us decided to count in groups of 10.
  • Inquiry - Since tomorrow is Gandhi's birthday, we read a story about his life and began to think about the characteristics he shares with other people we have learned about this year.  We decide he shared many qualities with Terry fox including, being hopeful, determined, selfless and a leader.

Ask me about...

how I counted the objects in Math today and why I chose that method to count them.
